Sponge: Events 2007–present

Sponges are the events that anchor the project. During each of the “absorb-a-thon” days of a Sponge, one topic is plumbed in depth. Sponges, which have lasted from one day (a Mini-Sponge) to five immersive days, include hands-on projects, field trips, visiting experts, films and readings. At the end of each workshop participants “wring-out” by sharing a thing (or things) they know with the rest of the group. This hierarchy-flipping between spongy experts (those who are completely saturated with what they know) and spongy learners (those with the strong desire to absorb knowledge) is an essential component of the project. Sponge is in the process of incubating new formats in its Anderson Gallery headquarters. Colablablab, the first semester-long Sponge is currently underway.
