The Jolly Green Giant

2004

I was invited by Socrates Sculpture Park to develop a proposal for an outdoor sculpture about the interaction of science, nature and technology. I worked with a sign-maker to produce a twenty foot tall, two-dimensional Jolly Green Giant. Made from _” thick aluminum sheet with a printed adhesive surface, the giant appeared to stand on his own two feet. I wanted to make a piece that alluded to our system of food production and our perceptions of what is healthy and “green”. I wondered if the Giant would be warmly received as a symbol of good health and nutrition or if he would be perceived as the ur-symbol of corporate branding and industrial agriculture.
